Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools
Business Meeting – Minutes - March 31, 2001
Loews Hotel
Annapolis, Maryland

President Orlando Taylor called the meeting to order at 8:45 a.m.
 
Ronald Kane moved that minutes of the April 15, 2000 Annual Meeting be approved as distributed. David Leyton-Brown seconded. The minutes were approved.
 
Treasurer’s Report
Harry Richards distributed copies of the Treasurer’s Report as of March 27, 2001. The fiscal year ended June 30, 2000, with a balance of $12, 706.28 in checking. The market value of the Kemper Funds as of 12/31/00 was $113, 564.38.
 
Harry reported that membership was at an all time high with 149 regular institutional members and 2 associate members.

Harry also reported that the operating budget, which is designed to cover the costs of running the association was barely meeting costs. Increases in printing, maintaining the web site, postage, etc were increasing. On behalf of the Executive Committee, Harry moved that the institutional dues be increased from $50 to $75 annually. Ron Kane seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
 
Executive Committee
The membership acknowledged and thanked David Leyton-Brown, Sr. Ann Heath, Charlena Seymour and Stacey Lane Tice for their service on the Executive Committee.
 
The membership approved the following individuals for two-year terms (2001-2003) on the Executive Committee as Members-at-Large:

Martha McKenna, Lesley University
Jack Narayan, SUNY Oswego
Richard Sleight, Yale University
John Lennox, York University

At-Large members of the committee who will continue through April 2002 are:

Christina Hannah, University of Maryland, University College
Gregory Kealey, Memorial University of Newfoundland
Ronald Kane, New Jersey Institute of Technology
Jeryl Mumpower, SUNY at Albany
 

Charlena Seymour, University of Massachusetts at Amherst was elected President-elect.
 
Harry Richards, University of New Hampshire was re-elected Secretary-Treasurer for a 3 year term.
 
Orlando Taylor was presented a plaque for his service as President.
 
CGS Report
Thomas Linney reported that the Summer Workshop will be held at the Loews Hotel in Annapolis, July 8 – 11, 2001. The CGS annual meeting will be held at the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel in San Diego, December 5 – 8, 2001. Thomas also gave us an update on the changes that were taking place in Washington under the new administration, including tax reform and the federal budget.
 
Peter Syverson reported that nationally graduate enrollments have been flat, although international enrollments are up and that it would appear that applications are up slightly. Peter also reported that CGS was undertaking a membership survey as the organization reaches out to the graduate community.
 
Meeting 2002
Lawrence Martin announced that the tentative dates for the annual meeting in 2002 are April 25 – 28, 2002. The location is yet to be determined although the New York metropolitan area is being seriously considered
