New NAGS/ETS Member Schools Award

NAGS/ETS Award For Excellence and Innovation in Graduate Admissions

The Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS) and Educational Testing Service (ETS) are pleased to announce the 2009-2010 NAGS/ETS Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Graduate Admissions. Presented by the GRE® and TOEFL® programs, the award will be distributed to a NAGS member schools in recognition of outstanding contributions in graduate admissions practices.

This award recognizes excellence and innovation in graduate admissions. ~Any NAGS member institution or graduate program within a NAGS member institution is eligible for the award.

The purpose of the award is to encourage, recognize and reward excellence and innovation in domestic and international graduate admissions at both the graduate school and program level. Applications may relate to any facet of the admissions process, from outreach and recruitment through selection and admission, e.g.:

§ increasing the diversity of applicants to graduate programs, including the STEM disciplines

§ using technology to communicate with and attract prospective applicants in new and effective ways

§ increasing the number of international students who seek an education at your institution

§ demonstrating success in enhancing the quality of the entering class.

Nomination criteria will be posted on this website and forwarded to member institutions during the Fall 2009.

Faculty Awards

Each year NAGS recognizes the contributions of three faculty members to graduate education. Two awards are for excellence in teaching and the third award is for excellence in mentoring.

Teaching Award

The Teaching Awards are designed to recognize excellence and creativity in teaching of graduate students at the master's and doctoral program levels. Innovation in graduate curriculum development and implementation also will be considered. The nominee must have been a faculty member of the nominating institution for at least three years at the time of the nomination.

A certificate and a $1000 award check are presented at the Annual Meeting. The recipient is expected to attend the meeting as a guest of the Association.

The Graduate Dean of each member institution is invited to nominate one individual for the award.

Announcements and deadlines for the annual competition are sent out each Fall to all member institutions.

Mentoring Award

The Mentoring Award is given for outstanding support of a graduate student or graduate students from course completion through research and placement. Criteria that may be considered in selecting a nominee include: provision of sound advice with respect to course of study, encouraging the best performance from students, generosity of time or other measures of effort at mentoring, assisting an unlikely or superficially unpromising student through to successful completion and placement, advice and other assistance regarding quality and quantity of student papers or other forms of publication and performance, extraordinary efforts or success with placement. These criteria are not meant to be exhaustive, but instead to suggest activities that might be considered in a nominating letter. The nominee must have been a faculty member of the nominating institution for at least three years at the time of the nomination.

Student Awards

Master's Thesis Award

Each year the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools recognizes an outstanding master's thesis that has been produced by a student at one of its member institutions. Nominees must have received the master's degree within three years preceding the year of competition.

The $1000 award is presented at the annual meeting by University Microfilms, Inc.. The recipient is invited to attend the meeting as a guest of the Association.

All member institutions in good standing are invited to submit nominations. There can be only one nominee from each institution.  Nomination guidelines are posted on the NAGS website.

Announcements and deadlines for the annual competition are sent out to each Fall to all member institutions.

 

Dissertation Award

Each year the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools recognizes an outstanding dissertation that has been produced by a Ph.D. candidate at one of its member institutions. Nominees must have received the doctoral degree within five years preceding the year of competition.

The $1000 award is presented at the annual meeting. The recipient is invited to attend the meeting as a guest of the Association.

All member institutions in good standing are invited to submit nominations. There can be only one nominee from each institution. Nomination guidelines are posted on the NAGS website.
